Advent Calendar Day 12

It could almost be that this series was planned so that I could publish this image on day 12. Genesee Brewing Co of Rochester, New York introduced 12 Horse Ale immediately after the repeal of prohibition in 1933. As you can imagine it became an iconic brand. I am sure there were good reasons for the name, sadly no amount of research has managed to unearth it. Also you will notice the curious inclusion of Hemlock Water as one of the choicest materials which make up this ale. I am not a chemist but I suspect that it must have been a very low concentration and the good folk of Rochester NY would have been unaware of it’s reputation as a poison. Dry hopping may have provided something that many later American beers lacked — flavour.
