Edinburgh United was indeed a United group of Breweries. The Company was registered December 1889 to acquire: Robert Disher & Co, of the Edinburgh & Leith Brewing Co, G Ritchie & Sons, Bell’s Brewery; Robin McMillan & Co, Summer Hall Brewery and David Nicolson, Palace Brewery. All in Edinburgh. Summer Hall Brewery closed in 1911 and Edinburgh and Leith Brewery and Palace Brewery are believed to have closed during World War 1 to conserve supplies.
Many of the labels of that period, reflect the originating brewery.
Bell’s Brewery was closed down in 1935 by Customs & Excise due to brewing irregularities and was acquired by John Jeffrey & Co. Ltd.
