The Old Brewery was founded in 1756 and operated initially as Sir Richard Hodgson & Co Ltd. Nationalised in 1916 as part of the war effort and used by the Carlisle State Management scheme as their sole brewery. Bought by Theakston Ltd when the scheme was privatised in the 1970s and closed in 1987 after the acquisition by Scottish & Newcastle.
