Label of the Year

Once again our Label of the Year Competition was well supported with numerous breweries (some of which I admit to not having heard of before!) submitting labels. The judges’ task to select the eventual winners was difficult! What makes a “good” label is subjective but I hope you’ll agree it’s an impressive selection.

As well as being a showcase for new labels, the competition also has a charitable purpose and this year we are immensely proud to have raised  £3,313  (a record) for the “Fresh Start, New Beginnings” charity that helps the recovery of children that have suffered sexual abuse

Thank-you to all in the brewing industry who support this competition. Their label entries, donations and hospitality throughout the year enable us to continue. Without them there would be no competition and no charity fundraising. Finally, congratulations to all our worthy winners!

A great result at LOTY at Adnams Brewery, Southwold

Southwold. A great little town with several lovely pubs serving delicious beer. What was there not to like?

Well to be honest, nothing. Several of us arrived on Friday and joined the five-pub tour as soon as we could, to enjoy the full range of Adnams’ beers. The highlights for us were the back bar at the Crown, the Fish and Chip meal at the Lord Nelson and finding Mosaic Pale Ale in the Sole Bay Inn.

Saturday morning and it was a really early start to set up the Southwold Arts Centre with the label displays, auction lots and desirable raffle prizes. We were joined by Mike Peterson and Jan from the Association for British Brewery Collectables, Maxine and Mike from the British Brewery Playing Card Society, Peter and Sue Cubley from the Beermat Society, Mike Brown from the Brewery History Society and Paul Travis of Beer-Inn Print brought a selection of books, pamphlets and periodicals for sale. We are really grateful to them for giving up their time to come and support LOTY.

The day kicked off with a welcome from Fergus Fitzgerald, Adnams Head Brewer, followed by an informative talk on the history of brewing in Southwold by Robert Porter former Quality Control Brewer. An excellent lunch courtesy of Adnams and a constant supply of Southwold Bitter, Broadside, Ghostship and Adnams Old Ale ensured the afternoon was a roaring success.

The label auction was followed by a number of us managing to squeeze in to the Brewery Tour which was entertainingly led by Fergus himself. We even got the story of their distillery for good measure.

e finished by presenting Hannah Walker from Adnams chosen charity, Fresh Start – New Beginnings with a cheque for £3,313 which is a new record amount raised. Our grateful thanks go to all those who put in the hard work to make it such a brilliant day.
