Originated from the Chequers Inn, which was owned by the Searancke family from c. 1635. Acquired by the Pryors of Baldock and in the latter part 19th century acquired two local brewers, Bradshaws & Sherriffs. Around 1882 the Pryors entered a partnership with the son of the founder of Reids of London. The business was registered in 1893 to acquire Pryor Reid & Co and Benjamin Young of Hertford. In 1902 the company merged with Glover & Sons Ltd of Harpenden, but was run separately. This continued until the business was sold to Benskin’s Watford Brewery in 1920, with around 105 public houses. The brewery was dismantled and the offices later used as bank. For a more complete history, follow this link http://www.ourhatfield.org.uk/page_id__221_path__0p106p.aspx
